Keeping Your Bathroom in Top Condition

As one of the busiest rooms in the house, it doesn’t take long for the bathroom to get messy and become a hot spot for mould, grime and bacteria to build up. With that in mind, cleaning the bathroom can quickly become a dreaded chore, especially as a quick wipe with an anti-bacterial wipe is unlikely to make much of a difference.

If you’ve got the bathroom cleaning blues or if you’re looking for effective cleaning advice, then we’ve got all the tips you need to make cleaning the bathroom a doddle.

Let the air circulate

Bathrooms and moisture go hand in hand, but so do moisture and most mucky bathroom problems, such as mould and mildew. Keep moisture under control by opening the window, or using the extractor fan when you take a shower and for 15 to 25 minutes afterwards. This allows the steam to dissipate and helps excess moisture to dry up.

If your bathroom does not have a window you will need an extractor fan in order to meet building regulations too, and if you’re interested in a wet room this will be an essential investment.

Keep a lid on it

We all know that age-old argument about putting the toilet seat down, but what about the lid? Closing the lid every time you flush is often completely forgotten about. This is a common bad habit and changing it can be key to keeping your bathroom both clean and hygienic.

Leaving the toilet lid open when you flush can allow bacteria and tiny water particles to spray across the room. Simply flip the lid down when you flush, and you’ll keep the bacteria contained, and the rest of the bathroom a much more hygienic space.Soft-close seats have a soft closing hinge to allow the lid to close without slamming.

Best brush practice

Toothbrushes can create a lot of mess, leaving trails of toothpaste on the basin, vanity unit and other surfaces. Storing toothbrushes in an upright position is more hygienic rather than laying them flat on surfaces.

A toothbrush holder or ceramic cup is ideal. If you store your toothbrushes in a glass or cup, be sure to rinse it with hot soapy water once a week, or blitz it in the dishwasher.

Hidden grime spots

Perhaps one of the reasons that cleaning the bathroom is one of the most dreaded household chores is because there are so many different areas that need attention. However, giving the tub, basin, shower and loo regular wipe-downs with hot soapy water can go a long way to keeping the bathroom clean, so it’s well worth focusing your attention on these often overlooked germ-traps during the weekly clean.

The right fixtures

Some bathroom products are made with ease of cleaning in mind, so look out for ones that will make your task simpler. Wall hung toilets, basins and bidets give you better access to all those tricky-to-reach spots, meaning you can keep them squeaky clean without too much effort. Back to wall toilets are great for eliminating potential dirt traps. Choosing your fixtures wisely can help you keep your bathroom as spotless as possible.

Surfaces

From window sills to units and shelves, all surfaces can pick up grime and bacteria. A swift wipe-down with a spray or anti-bacterial cleaner will keep the germs away.

Shower curtain

Mildew and mould can be a nightmare to remove from shower curtains and liners. A warm wash will rinse it clean for plastic and fabric curtains, as long as they’re machine washable. For fabric curtains simply follow the instructions on the care label, whereas plastic curtains or liners can be washed on a high temperature with your usual detergent.

As mildew is prone to staining, curtains can still appear grubby even after washing. As the old saying goes, prevention is better than the cure, so regularly running it through the washing machine will rinse away soap scum and other grime, preventing a mildew build-up.

The right scrubs and sprays

 There are lots of cleansers and cleaners available on the market, but not all cleansers are right for every material in your bathroom. Most multi-surface cleaners are fine for cleaning shelves, surfaces, handles and any other nooks and crannies in and around the bathroom. Additionally, it’s a common misconception that one type of cleanser is fine for use all over the bathroom. Different areas of the bathroom will require different products.

Tub

For cleaning your tub, ensure that the cleanser you’re using isn’t abrasive, as this can cause damage to the material. Generally speaking, the best thing to use for cleaning your bath is hot soapy water and a soft sponge.

Mirrors

Use glass cleaner on mirrors, windows, and other reflective surfaces to give them back their shine. Multi-surface sprays and other cleaners will most likely smear across the surface – usually making the glass appear dirtier than it was originally!

Tiles and grout

Because tiles are made from different materials, not all cleansers are appropriate for use. It is therefore important to check what type of cleanser will be most effective on your tiles. Natural stone, such as travertine, can be quite porous and is vulnerable to marks or damage by abrasive cleaners.

Specially formulated grout cleaners are ideal for getting the grime out of your tile grout. Alternatively, a steam cleaner can be a chemical-free option for removing dirt.

Cleaning your bathroom doesn’t need to be a big job. In fact, doing so little and often is more likely to prevent dirt from building up, resulting in an epic deep clean. What’s more, regular mini-cleans ensure the space stays hygienic and germ free too!

This one tip goes a long way and while it’s good advice for any bathroom, it’s especially useful for bathrooms where there isn’t an abundance of space. Having too much stuff in your bathroom not only impacts the internal space, but can make it appear messier than it really is.

Bathrooms can be clutter magnets, from daily use along with a high volume of household traffic, it’s no wonder that bathrooms can become very messy, very quickly. Going minimalist means only storing the items you really need in your bathroom – this way, you can really make the most of your storage – ensuring everything you need in the bathroom has a home.

You could start by having a sort through the items in the bathroom – be ruthless, if it doesn’t need to be in there then find another place for it in the house!

REAP THE BENEFITS OF FITTED FURNITURE

Speaking of storage, no bathroom can go without it and if you’re going minimalist, then you’ll certainly need somewhere to store those must-have bathroom products and items. In spaces that are a touch on the small side, finding sufficient storage (and somewhere for it to go) can feel a bit like solving a puzzle.

It might also be worth considering replacing your existing fittings with specially designed, space-saving equivalents. Wall-hung basins and toilets will increase the footprint of the space as the absence of the pedestal frees up floor space.

Slim-line or corner basins can be an ideal option for opening up the room, as these space-saving fittings fit snugly into the room without negatively impacting limited space. WHICH SHOWER SHOULD I CHOOSE?

Whether your bathroom is your personal oasis or at the centre of family life, there’s little doubt that your shower will be an important focal point. Choosing a shower that effortlessly meets your needs whilst seamlessly complementing your bathroom design can be a challenge, but when you get it right your bathroom will feel fresh and stylish for years.

We’ve put together a guide on how to choose a shower, the types of shower you should look for, and how to select one that complements your style.

Exposed or recessed showers?

These showers are exactly what they sound like – showers with controls that sit on your wall (exposed) or inside/flush with the wall (recessed).

If you’re styling a smaller bathroom, choosing a recessed (or concealed) shower will help give the feeling of more space. All you’ll see is the control and a plate that neatly conceals the shower, reducing visual clutter. Even if you have a vast oasis at your disposal, these types of showers lend themselves perfectly to minimalist and Scandi-style designs, where clean lines are a must. To make things a little easier, Heritage concealed valves are designed to fit into the smallest wall cavities, requiring only 35mm depth.  It’s still worth checking with your plumber before you purchase one though to ensure that it will be suitable for your wall.

Exposed showers are still a popular option, and in some instances can add something extra to a bathroom design. They’re also easier to install and fix in case something does go wrong, which may prove useful for busy family bathrooms.

Single or dual control showers?

Choosing your controls is a matter of personal preference. A single control shower will operate the flow and the temperature from one dial or lever. A dual control shower will have separate controls for each. Ask yourself where the controls would sit, what would be easiest for you to use, and which options come with the shower you want.

Which shower head: fixed, handset, or both?

When it comes to choosing a shower, the showerhead will be one of your most important considerations. As well as holding aesthetic appeal, the shower head you select should meet your needs and help you transform your bathroom into your personal haven.

Fixed shower heads are permanently secured to the wall or the ceiling. Alternatively, they may be attached with a rigid riser/fixed kit, where a pipe leads from the shower valve and control unit to the fixed head. Types of fixed shower head include rain showerheads, which are perfect for creating a home spa experience.

Handsets, on the other hand, are fixed to a rail and can be moved up or down depending on the height you want; it’s also very easy to control the direction of the water. They are attached to the shower control unit with a flexible pipe and can be removed for ultimate manoeuvrability. These types of showerhead may be ideal for families where everyone has a different preference. Styling your shower

Of course, choosing a shower that perfectly fits your needs is about more than function. Designers are paying increasing attention to shower designs, opening the door to more choices. The growing trend for industrial chic is reflected in beautifully designed exposed outlet showers, while concealed valves will unobtrusively lend themselves to an array of styles.

To find your perfect shower, look for the following:

Good temperature control

When buying a shower, make sure the temperature is easy to control so you can find your perfect level. Heritage showers are thermostatic, and set at 42-53 degrees. Even in the event of a cold water supply failure, Heritage showers will maintain a safe temperature.

Make sure your shower is compatible with your system

All homes are different, and some showers may not be suitable for your hot water system. Before choosing a shower, ask your plumber which types of shower will deliver the best results in your bathroom.

Think about size

Larger shower heads won’t necessarily give you a stronger, or better, flow of water. If you have low water pressure a large shower head may result in a disappointingly weak flow. Choose your shower head based on your water pressure and your plumber’s advice to help ensure you get the perfect end result.

Check water efficiency

Heritage has joined the Bathroom Manufacturers Association’s Water Label Scheme to help people save water.  To check how much water our showers use, just click on a product and select Water Label.  If you see a high flow rate with a red background the shower uses more water but provides a drenching experience.  If you see a low flow rate with a green background, the shower has been optimised for water efficiency.  You can reduce water usage on most showers by installing a flow limiter - speak to your plumber to find out more.
